Createasphere Brings 3D Road Show to ProductionCONN 2011

Keith, Kristi, and the rest of the team here at ProductionCONN, are happy to announce an exciting new partnership with Createasphere to bring its 3D Road Show to PCONN 2011.

Createasphere's interactive 3D Road Show includes presentations, 3D exhibits, and hands-on experience with the latest tools in stereoscopic 3D. The 3D Road Show will be the centerpiece of ProductionCONN 2011’s new Day of 3D track on December 1. The 3D Road Show is featured at five cities around the country: Chicago, Burbank, Austin, Miami, and now Greater Hartford (previously scheduled for New York City).

Kristin Petrovich Kennedy, President of Createasphere said, “Createasphere is excited to be partnering with ProductionCONN for our third 3D Road Show. We feel that the growing production in the New England market and the ability to bring the community together while presenting 3D education makes a powerful partnership.”

Createasphere joins Manhattan Edit Workshop and presenting sponsor AJA Video Systems as ProductionCONN’s key partnerships for the event’s inaugural run. ProductionCONN 2011 aims to deliver outstanding content, speakers, workshops, and exhibitions for professionals and students from all over the northeast region.

"One of the challenges industry trade shows in the Northeast have faced is drawing people from both Northern New England and Greater New York to the same event. Holding a small to mid-sized expo in one city and attracting attendees from the other seems to have proven fruitless. I believe we've solved this problem by placing ProductionCONN 2011 at the geographic center of Boston and New York,” said Keith Larsen, ProductionCONN Founder & Executive Director. “We knew we were on the right track when Kristin approached us about moving the Createasphere 3D Road Show New York to our event here in Connecticut. I think we’re on to something big."

In addition to the 3D Road Show, ProductionCONN will feature two days of exhibitions with major industry companies such as AJA Video, Autodesk, Adobe Systems Incorporated, Avid, HB Group, HB Communications, JVC, Panasonic, Zaxwerks, Maxon, Imagineer Systems, Imagine Products, Activate the Space, Telestream, G-Tech, and more. A variety of workshops aimed at professionals and students of all levels will be available, as well as the opportunity to hear guest keynote speakers Michael Tronick, Bobbie O’Steen, and Howard Baldwin.

Please join us in a warm welcome for our friends at Createasphere. We're happy to have them on board; their 3D Road Show promises to amp up the 3D programming at PCONN incredibly so! You won't want to miss this event.

To keep up-to-date with our growing exhibitor list, workshop details and schedule, speaker bios, and registration information, please visit http://productionconn.com.  And register today...the early bird special will be gone at the end of the month. Take advantage of those deals!

Steve Jobs: The Edison of Our Generation

Tonight I sit in stunned sadness and reflect on the impact Steve Jobs had on me personally.  In the summer of 1998, I saw Steve present for my first time at Macworld Expo, New York.  I was immediately drawn to his charismatic presentation of the first iMac.  The energy and passion in his address was intoxicating – and how about the CEO of a large company wearing jeans on stage!

This guy was different.  This guy was inspiring.  This guy spoke to me.

Until that point, I had only used Apple computers on non-linear editing systems, which were still feeling the pangs of being relatively new and very expensive to get your hands on.  Like much of the world, I was a PC owner wrestling with Windows daily...Macs were just NLE engines to me.  Macworld Expo was also the first trade show I attended.  Both experiences stirred something inside of me.  I didn't know quite what it was at first, and it wouldn't even begin to manifest itself until years later.

I bought my first Mac six months later and it's still running today as a donated internet and MS Office machine.  I've owned all things Apple and have introduced dozens of people to the Macintosh lifestyle over the years.  Final Cut Pro brought those expensive NLE's into our laps and every device added a new, revolutionary, and fun way to communicate and work.  Steve Jobs introduced innovative and awe-inspiring products year after year and I've never missed a Jobs Keynote address. To that end, I've admired his presentation skills even more than his creations.  He has inspired me to take on amazing challenges such as leaving my state job to venture out on my own in business, founding Connecticut Final Cut Pro User Group/Digital CONNtent Creators, and other such endeavors as a community leader and activist leading the charge against the silly status quo of the establishment.

So here we are, a mere 55 days to go until ProductionCONN 2011.  A trade show and expo that I hatched from a simple idea and have watched grow into the largest event of its kind to come to our little state.  From that first trade show experience and introduction to a man who would become my business hero, to now hosting my very own trade show, I've come almost full circle with the death of a pioneer.  In his spirit we know no bounds for what we can do here in Connecticut with ProductionCONN.

We entered an exciting partnership today, on the very day of his passing, which will be formally announced shortly. And we will continue to expand ProductionCONN until we just flat run out of time.  I believe that much like many of Steve's ideas, the inspiration behind this show comes from the simple question, "why not?"  So, I thank Steve Jobs for being the one man who took risks, believed he could change the world, stood tall in the face of adversity, and gave us all a new way of living.

ProductionCONN 2011 was born from Steve's very ideals, and I hope that you will all join us in honor of "Thinking Different" on November 30th and December 1st to celebrate technology and creativity on display at its finest.  We are all in this business in part because of the contributions of Steven Paul Jobs.

Here is the segment, which can also be viewed on the Let's Get Social YouTube page (which features many interviews with business leaders from around Connecticut).

What I Did at "Summer Camp" - NAB Style.

The yearly excursion to the NAB Show in Las Vegas has been more often than once referred to as "somewhat akin to going to summer camp."

Industry professionals from all over the world come together every spring to geek out over new products and software, great speakers, and you-heard-it-here-first announcements. But it isn't just that, is it? Year after year, tech-lovin', production and post-production luminaries bid farewell to their wives, husbands, children, significant others, clients, and co-workers (who they really couldn't wait to get away from anyway) to see their camp friends.

Saying goodbye to NAB "camp" friends
Each year, they travel to Vegas from far and wide, despite those inner rumblings of I'm not really into going this year, because the camaraderie is so infectious.

Speaking from experience, we go the entire year between visits with some of our old friends, and sometimes longer when life's escapades keep us away during the odd year or so. And every year, familiar faces come together--and new friends join the group--in whatever NAB clique you may run in; it's just like time hasn't passed. We laugh, we hang out, catch up, and reminisce about old friends who are no longer with us. Sometimes we hit the parties, and sometimes simply go on excursions to find eclairs in the middle of the night or find the Pinball Hall of Fame.

And when the week ends, we bid our goodbyes and promise to stay in touch. "I really don't know if I can do this again next year," one of us says, prompting nods of understanding and agreement from others. But it is hard to stay away from our proverbial summer camp, especially when it's the promised time we can see so many of our old friends. Oh, yes. And then there's that professional work thing as well.  We do like our gadgets and information, don't we!?

~

On the last day of the show, Keith spoke with Larry Jordan on the 2011 NAB Show Buzz about ProductionCONN.  Many thanks to our old camp friend Cirina Catania, who produces the show, for arranging the interview. It's a quick listen--Keith discusses how plans for PCONN came about, the benefits of being located in Hartford, a few details about our speakers, and a bit about our staff (like that fabulous marketing broad, Kristi).

PCONN Staffers Hit the Road to NAB...Vegas, Baby!

ProductionCONN's Keith, Kristi & Matt just wrapped up a crazy week in Vegas working at NAB and networking with old and new industry friends at night.

In between shifts working at the AJA booth, they wandered the show floor promoting PCONN and brokering deals to bring the best of the best companies to exhibit at our show on November 30 & December 1. We're very excited by the response we received and some of the negotiations we have on the table for more great products and speakers to add to the ProductionCONN roster!

We've added some of our personal pictures to the PCONN Facebook page, be sure to check them out! There are a few shots of our evening at IMUG's Media Motion Ball, an evening hanging out with the MoGraph guys at the Pinball Hall of Fame, prepping for the infamous 2011 Vegas Supermeet (where Apple announced FCPX), and some cool shots of Keith being interviewed by Josh Apter of Manhattan Edit Workshop for his NAB iPad-shot and edited-on-the-spot padumentaries. VERY cool! Check it out here:

NAB - On The Floor : ProductionCONN from Manhattan Edit Workshop on Vimeo.

Keith also appeared on the Digital Production BuZZ with Larry Jordan to discuss ProductionCONN.

Overall, we felt really good about our NAB experience this year. The fact that Keith & Kristi won $125 playing penny slots on the way out of town helped...a bonus that they promptly spent on a a feast of Indian food upon returning to Los Angeles.

As for our website changes, you won’t want to miss the Classes and Events page, where we’ve added the bios of our guests: Michael Tronick, Bobbie O’Steen, Howard Baldwin, Allan Title, Jem Schofield, Woody Woodhall and Jeff Hoyt.

Keith, Kristi, and Matt from the PCONN staff are currently getting ready to head out to Las Vegas for NAB 2011, where they plan to hit the town in these nifty new PCONN shirts. (They are the latest thing…get yours today!) Long days of meetings and work planned, but looking forward to coming back with lots of exciting news to share.

We’ve loved hearing all the great feedback and excitement coming from all over. It makes every moment of creating this event for the digital media community far and wide worth it!
